Topkapi Palace was the political center of the Ottoman Empire for roughly 400 years, home to the sultans, their court, and the empire's administration from the 1460s until the mid-19th century. Built on the tip of Istanbul's historic peninsula overlooking both the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, the palace isn't a single building but a walled complex of four courtyards, each more private than the last — from the outer grounds anyone could once enter to the Harem, where the sultan's family lived away from public view.

Inside, the palace holds one of the world's most significant collections of Ottoman and Islamic imperial treasures: jeweled thrones, ceremonial weapons, and the Topkapi Dagger, alongside relics held sacred across the Islamic world, including items associated with the Prophet Muhammad. The Harem section — a separate ticketed area — opens onto a labyrinth of tiled rooms, courtyards, and the sultan's own private quarters, giving a far more intimate sense of daily palace life than the ceremonial halls alone.

Most visits run two to three hours, longer with the Harem included, and the palace sits close enough to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque to easily pair in a single day exploring Istanbul's old city. Skip-the-line tickets are worth it in peak season, when the entrance queue alone can run well past an hour.
