Selime Monastery is the largest rock-cut religious complex in Cappadocia, carved into the soft volcanic cliffs at the northern end of the Ihlara Valley, near the village of Selime in Aksaray province. It dates back to roughly the 8th and 9th centuries and grew over time into a sprawling multi-story warren of rooms hollowed straight out of the stone. Inside you'll find a large cathedral-sized church with a barrel-vaulted ceiling and rock-cut columns, along with a kitchen, stables, living quarters, and monks' cells, all connected by narrow passages and steep, uneven steps. Fragments of old frescoes still survive on some of the walls.

The site is often the final stop on the southern Cappadocia route, usually paired with a walk through the Ihlara Valley canyon and a visit to one of the underground cities like Derinkuyu or Kaymakli. Getting around Selime involves real climbing. The passages are tight, the rock is smooth and can be slippery, and there are open drops in places, so grippy shoes matter more here than at most Cappadocia sites. It's worth taking your time, since the layout is easy to get turned around in and the best views over the valley are from the upper levels.

Selime sits well outside the main Goreme cluster, so most people reach it on a guided full-day tour rather than independently. Entry is a separate paid ticket that is often not included in tour prices, so it's worth checking what your booking covers before you go. Allow around 45 minutes to an hour to explore properly, more if you want to climb through the whole complex at a relaxed pace.
