About Ihlara Valley

Ihlara Valley is a green river canyon in the southwestern part of Cappadocia, cut over time by the Melendiz River into the soft volcanic rock of the plateau. It runs for roughly 14 kilometers between the village of Ihlara at one end and Selime at the other, with walls that rise steeply on both sides. What sets it apart from the rest of Cappadocia is the water and the shade. Instead of open, dusty rock formations, you walk a flat trail alongside a stream, under poplars and willows, which makes it noticeably cooler than the fairy-chimney valleys further east.

The canyon walls are dotted with rock-cut churches, many of them decorated with Byzantine frescoes that early Christian communities carved and painted into the cliffs. Not all of the churches are easy to reach, and a lot of the color has faded, but several near the main stairway entrance still show clear painted scenes. Most guided visits walk only a stretch of the full valley rather than the entire length, usually the section between the main entrance and Belisirma village, where riverside restaurants sit right by the water and are a common lunch stop. From there the wider route often continues on to Selime Monastery, a huge complex carved straight into the cliff at the far end.

There is a paid entry to the valley, separate from any tour, and the main access point involves a long flight of stairs down into the canyon, so decent footwear helps. The trail itself is fairly level once you're at the bottom. Ihlara is on the western, quieter side of Cappadocia and is usually combined with Derinkuyu Underground City and Selime in a single full day, since it sits well outside the main Goreme cluster. Bring water and something for shade in summer, and give yourself a bit more time if you want to climb up to see more than the first few churches.
