About this tour
The Sema is the whirling ceremony of the Mevlevi order of Sufism, an 800-year-old practice in which dervishes in white robes turn slowly to music as a form of meditation and prayer. You'll watch the roughly one-hour performance inside the Hodjapasha Cultural Complex, a 550-year-old Ottoman bathhouse in Istanbul's Sirkeci area that has been restored into a domed performance hall. Admission also gets you into a small exhibition of dervish artifacts that explains where the ritual comes from and what it means.
