Hours, Dress Code, and What to Expect Underground
The Basilica Cistern runs two separate sessions every day. The daytime session is open from 09:00 to 18:30, then the site closes briefly. An evening session reopens from 19:30 to 22:00 with different, more dramatic lighting. The cistern is shut between 18:30 and 19:30, and a daytime ticket will not get you into the evening session, so pick the one you actually want when you book.
There's no dress code for the cistern itself, but if you're pairing it with Hagia Sophia or the Blue Mosque nearby, both call for modest dress, so plan your outfit around them. Wear supportive, comfortable shoes either way, since the floors are damp and the surfaces are uneven down there.
